About Dr. Lopez
Dr. Ruben Montelongo Lopez received his Bachelor’s degree from The University of Texas, and his medical degree from The University of Michigan Medical School. He continued his training with a general surgery internship at The University of Texas Health Science Center, in Houston , Texas. where he also completed his General Surgery residency, followed by a fellowship in trauma surgery. He then completed a second Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at The Texas Heart Institute and MD Anderson Cancer Center under the direction of world renowned Heart Surgeon, Dr Denton Cooley in Houston, Texas.
Board-certified in General Surgery, Dr. Lopez is currently in practice at Cardiovascular Associates in Harlingen, Texas, and serves as the Trauma Medical Director at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen. Dedicated to education in his field, Dr. Lopez is currently a clinical assistant professor of surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and has held numerous positions on hospital committees throughout his career. He now serves as the chairperson of the Physician Leadership Committee at Tenet Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen. He has been very active with the state with the Trauma System Committee where he has served two terms.
During his career, Dr. Lopez has received many honors and accolades, including being named Best Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon by the Valley Morning Star newspaper in Rio Grande Valley. He has given more than twenty lectures and presentations at various medical conferences, and has three published articles in respected medical journals. Dr. Lopez is a member of a number of professional organizations, including the Denton A. Cooley Cardiovascular Surgical Society, the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network, and the Texas Medical Foundation.
